NEWS!

20th FEBRUARY 2020

A CHANGE OF PLAN for the 'Thursday Social'! Since the British Legion already hold their meetings at the cricket club on the last Thursday of the month, we're going to move on a week & have our first post-training get-together on Thursday 5th March - the evening of the next structured training session. Simon will still be offering guidance to those entering the last few weeks of their marathon training, there'll still be some snacks provided & if there's enough interest we'll make it a regular event on the 1st Thursday of future months. Hope you can come along! [David Emanuel]

17th FEBRUARY 2020

SOME DETAILS FOR SETTLE on Sunday. Those travelling by coach, we’ll be leaving Royton at 7am. Registration details have been sent to every runner, so make sure you read through them. It's been agreed that we can use the showers at the swimming baths for £1 each (additional donations will be gratefully received - collection bucket will be available). We have a space reserved in the Royal Oak for food & drinks from 11.30am, close to coach & finish, all are welcome. We’ll leave Settle around 6pm. I’ve got some little quizzes & prizes but will require an entry fee, so rob your piggy-banks of 50p & £1 coins. See you Sunday!  [Martina Naismith]

16th FEBRUARY 2020
AFTER CLUB TRAINING on Thursday 27th February we're planning to hold our 1st 'Thursday Social'. The idea is to get together in the cricket club bar after we get back from our run (usually between 8pm - 8.15pm), with a few snacks provided, mainly to talk about running stuff. If there's enough interest we'll make it a regular event on the last Thursday of every month. With lots of club members approaching the last phase of their Spring marathon training, we're calling this inaugural event 'Howard's Way' - Simon will be sharing some ideas on how to get the most out of the last few weeks of training and approach your tapering, with the opportunity to ask questions of him & others with plenty of marathon experience. Of course you don't have to be booked on a marathon to come along; in fact you don't even need to have been at training, everyone is welcome! In particular it would be great to see those club members who haven't been able to make it to club nights for a while due to injury, other commitments, etc. Hope to see you on 27th!  [David Emanuel]

IT'S BEEN A WHILE since we last had an RRR parkrun day & the 500th Oldham parkrun on Saturday 4th April seems like the ideal opportunity! Our aim is to get a minimum 50 club members to take on all of the volunteer roles that morning, as well as getting the RRR pacing team back in action. It's the day before the Manchester Marathon, so we hope that those of you running on the Sunday will be prepared to volunteer & rest your legs. Please let me know if you're interested in taking on any of these regular parkrun volunteer roles or joining the pacing team.  [David Emanuel]

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO responded to last year's survey about when we should hold future presentation nights. The votes were split almost 50/50 (even closer than the Brexit referendum!), but because even some of those who voted for January had reservations (e.g. it would have to be late in the month, after payday), we've decided to stick with an early December date. However we are announcing it much earlier & will continue to remind you throughout the year. Please put the date in your diary!  [David Emanuel]

THE MINUTES FROM this year's RRR AGM on 31st January, along with the year-end financial summary, are now available on the Members Page of this website. This page is restricted to club members only, so you'll need to login (or register if you haven't previously done so) in order to view these documents. The minutes include confirmation of the changes to the RRR Committee & appointments to other key roles - you can also see all the new role holders on the updated Contacts/Officials page. As Bryan Lawton said at the AGM, thanks on behalf of the whole membership to those stepping down this year - Brian Moore (Club Secretary), Bernie Goodwin (Social Secretary), Shane Reading (Men's Captain) & Val Kilburn (Women's Captain) - for their contribution to the club & a warm welcome to the new post-holders!  [David Emanuel]

THE 1ST RRR COACH TRIP of 2020 is almost upon us & we’re off to pastures new on Sunday 23rd February for the Settle 10K, 10 mile or half marathon, depending on your choice! It’s an early start but you can get a bit of sleep on the journey, which will be about 90 minutes. The cost is £15 per person. We'll be leaving at 7am sharp from the usual location (Radcliffe Street in Royton, near Mazzo, OL2 6QL), returning from Settle at 6pm. Please bring with you some loose change, as we will be doing some games & charity fundraising on the coach! To book your seat please complete this short form.  [Martina Naismith]

30th JANUARY 2020

ONCE AGAIN WE ARE LOOKING for volunteers for the RRR water station at the Manchester Marathon on Sunday April 5th 2020. Due to the course changes we're no longer at our usual spot - they have asked us to cover the opposite end of the course, the first water station. I don't have much info at present, but I'm guessing this will mean an earlier start/finish. Hopefully (though not definitely) we can get cleared up in time to see some of the finishers. Please email me if you can help us out & as soon as I have more details I'll let you know.  [Mary Freer]

WITH THE 1ST club championship race of 2020 at Dewsbury fast approaching, please find attached this year's provisional group allocations. Last year's group is shown in brackets (where applicable). The aim of the competition is to create groups of runners of a similar standard, so that all members feel that if they compete to the best of their ability they can challenge for prizes. To try to achieve this we use group threshold times for each of the 'standard' race distances & each person has been allocated to what we consider the most appropriate group based on race/parkrun times achieved in 2019. Please note that we do not include races such as the Cowm 5Ks which are not officially recognised/accurately measured. In some cases there was insufficient evidence from performances last year to allocate someone to a group - new members, those who didn't race due to injury, etc. These are shown in a separate 'TO BE ALLOCATED' list. We will assign these individuals to an appropriate group based on their 1st club championship race(s) in 2020. However we recognise that there can be factors other than race times which make you feel you have been placed in the incorrect group. In such cases appeals will be considered - please send an e-mail as soon as possible, including a reason for your challenge.  [David Emanuel]

THE SOUTH EAST LANCS CROSS-COUNTRY Presentation Night will take place on Friday 27th March at North Chadderton Social & Bowling Club on Broadway. Tickets cost £4.50 (which includes supper). Limited tickets are avaialble to each club, so if you're interested in attending please let me know.  [David Emanuel]

THE RRR AGM will take place at Royton Cricket Club on Friday 31st January, starting at 7.30pm. Click here for a copy of the agenda for the meeting. If you have anything that you would like to be considered under Any Other Business, please let us know by Wednesday 28th January at the latest. Hope you can make it!  [David Emanuel]

18th JANUARY 2020

MANY THANKS TO ALL those who have taken part in the nomination process ahead of this year's RRR Annual General Meeting on 31st January. As it stands we have people proposed for all of the new & existing roles bar one. As only one person has been nominated for each position there is no need for a vote and these appointments will be formally confirmed at the AGM. The one exception is the committee position of Club Secretary. Brian Moore has decided to step down from this role and we have not received any nominations. We are therefore extending the deadline for this role only by another week. If you are interested in putting your name forward for this position, please complete this nomination form by 24th January 2020 at the latest. As you will see, you will need to provide the names of two current members of RRR who have agreed to act as your 'proposer' and 'seconder'. Once your nomination form has been received you will be contacted with further information about the election process. If more than one person is nominated for the role, there will be a secret ballot of members to determine who is elected to that position for the 12 months following the AGM.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Brian Moore (secretary) and Bernie Goodwin (social secretary) for their many years of service to our club as part of the RRR committtee. I'd also like to thank Shane Reading & Val Kilburn, who have decided at this time to step down from their roles as Men's Captain and Women's Captain respectively. I'll say more about their contribution to the club at the AGM.

If you have any questions about the nomination process, please speak to a current member of the RRR committee (contact details can be found on the Contacts/Officials page.  [Bryan Lawton]

AFTER ANOTHER successful competition last year, finishing with a great final between Martin Thompson & Dave Peart, we're now taking entries for the 2020 RRR Cup. If you've not been involved before...it's a completely free competition based around head-to-head races at Oldham parkrun. It's not a massive commitment - Martin's victory last year involved running on just 5 Saturday mornings between February & November - but on past evidence it's a great way to improve your parkrun PB. You'll be drawn to run against a fellow RRR at Oldham parkrun, on a mutually convenient date, with the result determined by a handicap based on your best (recent) 5K times. The winner progresses through to the next round & so on until a final later in the year. The First Round draw will be made after club training one evening later this month, with the aim of starting the competition (with a Preliminary Round if required) in February - so please let me know if you would like your name to be in the hat. You won't regret it!
